A Bakery & Pastry Counter Staff member is the primary customer service representative of the bakery, responsible for assisting customers with purchases, processing transactions, and maintaining a clean and well-stocked display area. They ensure a positive customer experience by providing product knowledge and recommendations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Customer Service Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a friendly and approachable demeanor, and the ability to handle inquiries or complaints professionally.

Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in order taking, packaging, labeling, and maintaining hygiene standards.

Basic Math & Computer Skills: Proficiency in basic math for weighing products and handling transactions, and the ability to quickly learn and operate POS systems and inventory software.

Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 20-50 pounds (e.g., ingredient sacks, trays), and work in a fast-paced environment.

Reliability & Flexibility: Punctuality and the ability to work flexible hours, which often include early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Food Safety Knowledge: Understanding and adherence to health and safety regulations; a food handler certification is often required.

Prior Experience: While on-the-job training is common, previous experience in a customer service or food service role is often preferred. 

This role is ideal for an energetic, organized individual who enjoys working with people and has a passion for quality baked goods. 

Requirements

  • Core Responsibilities

    • Customer Service: Greet customers warmly, answer questions about bakery items (ingredients, allergens, etc.), provide product recommendations, and take special orders in person and over the phone.

    • Sales & Cash Handling: Accurately process sales transactions using a Point-of-Sale (POS) system, including handling cash, credit cards, and electronic payments.

    • Product Handling & Display: Package, price, and label baked goods neatly and accurately. Arrange products in display cases in an attractive manner, ensuring items are rotated by date (FIFO method) to maintain freshness and minimize waste.

    • Cleaning & Sanitation: Maintain a clean and organized work area, including counters, display cases, and seating areas. Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines, including proper handling procedures and temperature control requirements.

    • Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels in the display cases and stockroom, restocking merchandise as needed and communicating any shortages or ordering needs to the manager.

    • Basic Food Preparation (as needed): Assist with simple preparation tasks, such as slicing bread, icing donuts, or portioning ingredients, depending on the bakery's needs.

    • Team Collaboration: Work effectively with bakers and other staff to ensure smooth operations and a steady supply of fresh products, especially during busy periods.
